The Hypocrisy of California Politicians Pushing Gun Control while Supporting Prop 47/57
On February 14, 2018, a mass shooting was committed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people were killed and seventeen more were wounded, making it one of the world’s deadliest school massacres. People from across the globe naturally tried to make some sense of this evil act.
California politicians quickly jumped to respond, politicizing the tragedy by calling out the gun lobby and pro-2nd Amendment Americans. This is not uncommon, whenever there is any gun-related tragedy politicians are quick to legislate by emotion and use it as a platform to push their anti-2nd amendment agenda. But this outrage poses an interesting dichotomy within the ranks of California’s ruling elites.
The irony of this politicized outrage is the fact that the California Majority Party has been DECREASING penalties for criminals charged with gun crimes for the last couple of years. Just last year, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 620, which seeks to lower criminal charges in cases where firearms are used to commit a felony.
Further, California’s ruling party outspokenly supports Prop 47 which LOWERED the criminal charges for people who STEAL guns. Under this new law criminals who have been caught with stolen guns valued below $950 are no longer taken to jail but instead written a citation.
A six-month investigation reported in 2016 found nearly 70,000 guns were lost or stolen in California over the last half-decade and many of those same guns were later used to commit other crimes. That’s about 34 guns every day that are stolen from legal gun owners. This is all on the tails of the passage of Prop 47.
Since the passage of Prop 47, there have been multiple attempts to make ALL gun theft a felony, rather than a misdemeanor — only to be turned down by California’s ruling politicians. Where were the angry twitter posts? Where was the outrage then?
If someone is intending to harm or murder an individual (also very illegal and banned from this state) then there is no gun control campaign, law, or ban that will affect their thought process. These policies driven by emotion only seek to harm law-abiding citizens who will respect these laws as they pass even though it makes it more difficult for them to protect themselves and their family. With crime rising due to Prop 47/57 it has never been more important for Californians to have the ability to protect themselves and their families.
